How to tie an alpine butterfly knott - Over hand method

The alpine butterfly can be used as a multi-directional knot which can be tied along any section of your rope or used to isolate a damaged section of the line.

The over hand method

Form three loops over the top of your hand , starting from your inner palm, then outer palm and finally with the third loop crossing over in between the other two loops to the middle palm.

Grab the end loop (finger tips side ) and fold it across and then back under between the other two loops and your palm.

Holding onto the loop you have just tucked through, pull your other hand away releasing the other loops

Still holding onto the loop you can now start forming the knot by drawing tension on the two tales.

Once your knot is formed you are ready to pack and dress the knot by grabbing both tails and by using your thumbs to further dress the knot , whilst drawing tension on the tales to further pack the knot.
