How to tie a figure eight follow through (re-thread) knot

A figure eight follow through knot, also known as a figure eight re-thread, is a strong and reliable knot that is commonly used in vertical rescue and climbing situations. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to tie a figure eight follow through knot for vertical rescue:

Start by forming a single figure of eight knot in the rope, with the tail of the rope  extending upwards.

Bring the tail end of the rope around the anchor point.

Thread the tail end of the rope down through the top loop hole again, this time coming down through the center of the top loop.

From this point use the tail end of the rope to follow the course of the original knot similar to laying a second lane down on a racing track. 

The line will follow down and run inside the original bottom loop.

Coming out of the bottom loop the line will then follow the outside line of the original top loop.

If you follow the profile of the original knot successfully the working end of the line should follow through and out through the bottom loop

Once you have arranged a nice flat profile you are ready to dress and pack it. To do this take the top loop and pull it slightly back and away off the inside loop.

With the bottom loop once again just slightly push it back and away off the inner loop.

Tighten the knot by pulling on each leg whilst holding the anchor loop (NOT the actual knot) as this will cause it to bunch.
